Lola: A Beloved Pitbull Tribute
Lola was our second pitbull, following Ox, and she quickly became a cherished member of our family during the challenging times of Covid. We discovered her at the Clatsop Animal Shelter in Astoria, Oregon, where there was a notable shortage of adoptable pitbulls. Despite being beautiful, Lola had a reputation for being reactive around other dogs.
Her personality was unpredictable; some dogs she would challenge, while others she would ignore completely. To ensure everyone’s safety during walks and outings, we often used a muzzle on her.
When Lola joined our family, she came with a skin condition that was suspected to be caused by allergies to chicken. After consulting with our veterinarian and trying cytopoint injections—which provided temporary relief—we decided to change her diet when she began refusing kibble. Transitioning her to canned food not only resolved her skin issues but also restored the shine to her coat.
Lola wasn’t very vocal except for barking at deer or passersby. She had an undeniable bond with her dad and found joy in playfully destroying boxes around the house. Her playful nature brought endless laughter into our lives.
Sadly, after two years together, we lost Lola to spleen cancer. Although our time with her was brief, we loved her deeply as if she had been part of us forever.
