Ox: A Heartwarming Tribute to Our Beloved Rescue Dog

About three months after the loss of our cherished dog, Tuffy, we felt it was time to welcome another furry friend into our home. Despite my husband’s reservations, I visited a local shelter alone, determined to find a pet in need.

Walking through the shelter, I noticed many adorable dogs; however, I focused on those who had been waiting for a family the longest. After passing by several energetic pups, I found myself back in the lobby discussing my experience with the staff. They quickly directed me to Ox – a gentle soul who had spent over two years at the shelter.

Initially hesitant due to his appearance as a pitbull, Sara, the shelter manager, assured me that Ox was not what he seemed and suggested fostering him first. Intrigued yet cautious, I agreed and awaited her home visit.

Sara promptly brought Ox out for me to meet him. To my surprise, this sweet boy immediately began warming up in our presence. We left him alone for just a couple of hours upon returning home and were amazed when we found everything untouched – proof of his gentle nature.

The following day at Petco marked his transformation: new collar, toys galore, and even pampering from his dedicated groomer who insisted he was “her dog.” Ox quickly became known as our lovable clown—his playful antics included communicating with us in ways that made us laugh out loud!

He loved rolling onto his back for belly rubs and delighting in tearing apart stuffed toys. Hiking adventures and chicken treats brought him joy while raccoons sparked his disdain.

Sadly, after only two years with us due to recurring health issues related to UTIs that led to mobility problems, we faced one of life’s hardest decisions—to say goodbye.

Despite our heartbreak from losing him too soon, Ox taught us invaluable lessons about love and resilience during our time together. His spirit will forever remain etched in our hearts.
